‘Macedonia tough & never easy’

Spain midfielder Thiago Alcantara admitted Macedonia “was a tough game physically” as teammate Marc Bartra “knew it wouldn’t be easy”.

Thiago and Bartra took advantage of injuries to Andres Iniesta and Gerard Pique by helping Spain to a 4-0 victory over Macedonia, which ensured La Roja stayed top of Group G in 2018 World Cup qualifying.

“The team enjoyed themselves, that’s the main thing. We had a very complete game,” the Bayern Munich man said after the match.

“We didn’t leave anything behind, we had a great result against a team that made things very difficult for us. These are three very important points for qualification.

“I took blows from all angles. It was a tough game physically.

“It’s not a case of forgetting about anyone, it’s to seize the moment.

His Borussia Dortmund rival Bartra added: “We knew it wouldn’t be easy. They’re quick on the counterattack and uncomfortable with the ball.

“Still, we were sincere in our approach and it’s important that we’ve picked up three more points. We can go home happy with the clean sheet and everything else we did.

“We had to be very attentive and be vigilant defensively. We had more of the ball, that was what Coach wanted, and ultimately we won.”
