Silva: Spain didn’t miss stars

David Silva felt Spain did not miss their stars during Saturday’s 4-0 victory over FYR Macedonia in 2018 World Cup qualifying.

Silva was one of the players who stepped up in the absence of key quartet Gerard Pique, Sergio Ramos, Jordi Alba and Andres Iniesta, although he missed a gilt-edged chance to wrap the game up midway through the second half.

“I missed a chance that I couldn’t score, but the most important thing is that we won and we’re happy about it,” the Manchester City playmaker said after the match.

“Of course, these types of matches are difficult because [the opponents] sit back. Once we scored our first goal, things became easier.

“They found it tough in the second half because they played quickly in the first.

“Absences? We have many players who do things well, but in the end we didn’t miss them.”
