Gus Poyet is reportedly on the verge of being sacked by Real Betis, with former caretaker manager Juan Merino favourite to take the reigns.
The Uruguayan coach is under pressure following a string of poor results and performances, with Los Verdiblancos winning only three of their opening ten league games, with fans chanting for him to be sacked following recent defeats to Real Madrid and Espanyol.
Mundo Deportivo report that Merino – who has had two previous stints as interim boss, including last season before being replaced by Poyet – will be appointed if Betis fail to get a good result away to Villarreal on Sunday evening.
Merino took control on a temporary basis in January after the dismissal of Pepe Mel, where he steadied the ship by winning six of his 20 matches in charge and drawing seven, bringing them from 16th to a 10th-placed finish.
The 46-year-old has previously had stints at Recreativo Huelva and Xerez, and represented Betis for twelve years as a player before joining Recre in 2002, where he ended his playing career.
His overall record at Betis in his previous stints stands at ten wins, seven draws and seven defeats.
