Pepe to miss Madrid derby

Real Madrid have confirmed “a grade-two thigh injury” for Pepe, which rules him out of the capital derby against Atletico.

A medical report on Madrid’s official website explained “after tests carried out on Pepe at the Sanitas La Moraleja University Hospital, he has been diagnosed with a grade-two muscle injury in the biceps femoris in his left leg, pending recovery.”

The centre-back had to be replaced midway through the first half against Alaves and underwent an MRI scan on Monday, which revealed the tear.

He is expected to miss around four weeks, rendering him unavailable for games against Legia Warsaw, Leganes, Atleti, Sporting CP and Sporting Gijon.

The 33-year-old also faces a race against time to be back for the Clasico at Barcelona on December 4.
