Sampaoli plays down Sevilla hype

Jorge Sampaoli has played down the hype surrounding Sevilla ahead of Saturday’s trip to Sporting Gijon. “It’s too early to think about winning La Liga…”

Sevilla’s 1-0 win against Atletico Madrid last week saw the Andalusians move up to second in the table, two points better off than their opponents, but Sampaoli made it clear the result did not mean they had suddenly become a member of Spain’s top three.

“It’s too early to think about winning La Liga because there’s a lot of the season still to go and three teams are separate from the rest, so maintaining this consistency will be difficult,” he said at a Press conference.

“Our win against Atleti? It doesn’t mean Sevilla are among the top three teams [in Spain] because, as a group, we have a lot to improve on, although a win against Sporting would mean us continuing to keep an eye on what happens at the end of the season.

“I don’t want to see a change in the attitude of our game because we must perform the same everywhere we go, so against Sporting we must be better than a team in a lot of need and whose fans could play a role.

“I want us to be as competitive as we were against Atletico, but while keeping our feet on the ground after a week of praise from the Press, which can create good or bad radicalism, depending on the result.

“Champions League? We’ll make changes, but always within the idea of consolidating our base and adding players that embrace what the Coach asks of them when injuries start to pile up.”
