RM wanted Pep to replace Rafa

Real Madrid ambitiously attempted to persuade Pep Guardiola to replace Rafael Benitez, according to Pep's friend and biographer Marti Perarnau.

The 45-year-old's intention of leaving Bayern Munich had already been made clear while it was a further two months until the former Barcelona manager was announced as replacing Manuel Pellegrini at Manchester City.

"Real Madrid called Pep Guardiola to try and tempt him last November, before they sacked Benitez," Perarnau revealed on Spanish radio station Cadena Ser.

"Madrid contacted [Josep Maria] Orobitg, Guardiola's agent, in order to try and contract him.

"But from the start it was out of the question. I was there."
