Cerezo: Atleti have been ignored

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo believes that the awards and recognition his club’s staff are now receiving is long overdue.

The 68-year-old was speaking after his club stole the show at the league’s annual awards ceremony on Monday night, where they won the Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, Goalkeeper of the Year and Defender of the Year awards.

"At least this year they have remembered us, after many years of being ignored," Cerezo said to Marca, from the ceremony at Valencia's Palacio de Congresos.

Colchoneros coach Simeone gave an emotional speech from the podium while receiving his coach of the year trophy – his second since joining the club in 2011.

The Argentine said he felt "lucky" to have the chance to work with a "group of incredible men" at Atletico, while Jan Oblak and Diego Godin scooped the goalkeeper and defender prizes respectively.

Griezmann was not in attendance to receive his prize, with Cerezo stepping up to collect the award on his behalf.

"Griezmann deserves this prize," Cerezo said. "We are very proud to have him at our club."
