Gento new honorary RM president

Real Madrid legend Paco Gento has been named as the new honorary president at the Santiago Bernabeu at the club's AGM.

Having made over 600 appearances for Los Blancos, Gento won six European Cups and twelve La Liga titles in a glittering career.

The 83-year-old spent 18 seasons at the club and now assumes the role that has been left vacant since the death of his former team-mate Alfredo Di Stefano two years ago.

Current Real Madrid president Florentino Perez confirmed the news on Sunday at the club’s AGM, with Gento receiving a warm round of applause.

"I speak to you of a great man and a great player who joined Real Madrid in 1953 from Racing Santander," Perez announced.

"He was then 19 years old and was here with us as a player for 18 seasons.

"Dear Paco Gento, beyond this record, you represent the values of Real Madrid, you are part of this badge and will remain forever in the hearts of all Madridistas around the world. I know our great Alfredo Di Stefano would be proud that you are his replacement as head of the presidency."

Gento netted 182 goals for Madrid and is the only player in the club’s history to win six European Cups.
