Prandelli: Valencia lacked unity

Cesare Prandelli claims Valencia were lacking “a common idea” upon his arrival as he prepares for his La Liga debut on Sunday against Sporting Gijon.

Prandelli’s first match as Valencia Coach comes against a Sporting side just a point and place above them in the table, and the Italian is keen for his new charges to play with “balance”.

“We know that we’ll face a very organised and good team that will cover the spaces and with the support of their fans. We’ve prepared with concentration for this match,” he said at a Press conference.

“I won’t say anything about Abelardo. We need to have a lot of balance and recover the ball quickly when we lose it.

“We’re working hard on the defensive phase. The first idea is to keep the balance between midfield and defence.

“If we only defend, it won’t go well. All of us will defend, but if there’s the option then we’ll try to score.

“We hope to be very compact, with very few ideas but very clear ones, no doubt. We were lacking a common idea.

“In certain situations, we saw individual ideas, but I’m convinced we can find a lot more confidence if the idea is shared between us.

“There are still 11 games before the winter transfer window, so I’m not thinking about it.

“We appreciate what we have, it’s not fair to talk about the players, considering we have a game coming up.

“The concept of balance is clear. If we have a very long team then we’re all vulnerable.

“It’s not easy to find balance. If we work on 45 metres and protect that area then we’ll be only a bit vulnerable.

“The best thing is that everyone wants to be involved and that’s a great start for me.

“There’s competition between the players. We played a game against the youth team and the lads applied very high intensity.”
