Poyet wants Betis ‘English mentality’

Gus Poyet has explained how he is trying to implement an ‘English intensity and mentality’ into his Real Betis side.

The Uruguayan played for seven years in England for Chelsea and Tottenham – he still calls London ‘home’ – and has also coached at both Brighton and Sunderland, and he believes the pace and mentality of top flight English clubs would be beneficial for his side.

“I am trying to get an English intensity and mentality into the Betis team here,” the 47-year-old explained in the London Evening Standard.

“It takes time to gel but we can do it. We have the right spirit.

"It is why I love Betis.  This place in unique. The fans are unique. When you are offered the chance to come here, you don't even think about it. You just say. When? How? Now.

"There is so much passion here I had to take the team out of the city to get away from it before the derby."

Poyet joined the Andalucians from Greek side AEK Athens, and he now believes this is a make or break time in his coaching career.

“My future as a coach depends on how I perform with Betis,” he continued.

“If I do well maybe I will go higher but if not then obviously it will be difficult – that is the nature of management.

"I have managed in the Premier League, the Championship, Greece and Spain but my only aim now is to achieve something here.

"This is a turning point for me. I've worked in a lot of places and learned a lot. Now I can out it call into practise here.”
