Spain call up Ander Herrera

Spain have called up Ander Herrera to their squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Italy and Albania this month.

Herrera has never before been capped at senior level for Spain, but has experience playing in at under 23, under 21 and under 20 levels, and he has been drafted into the squad as competition as Thiago Alcantara and Saul Niguez are both struggling with knocks, while Javi Martinez has been forced to withdraw from the squad.

Current Spain boss Julen Lopetegui coached the Manchester United midfielder while managing the Spanish under 21 squad and he is believed to be a fan of Herrera, who has played alongside Paul Pogba in recent weeks in the heart of United's midfield.

Lopetegui's side face Italy in Turin on Thursday night before travelling to Albania for their clash on Sunday and whilst it is unlikely the 27-year-old will start in either clash, he could potentially play a role from the bench.
