OFFICIAL: Valencia appoint Prandelli

Valencia have officially appointed former Italy boss Cesare Prandelli as their new Coach on a two-year contract.

Prandelli has put pen to paper until 2018 with Valencia and will be at Mestalla on Sunday to watch his new team face Atletico Madrid from the President’s box, before holding training for the first time 24 hours later.

“Valencia Football Club wish to inform all their fans that they have reached an agreement with the Italian Coach Cesare Prandelli to take over as Coach of the first team until June 30, 2018,” read a statement on Los Che’s official website.

“Prandelli, 59, initialed his agreement with the President Chan Lay Hoon today and will attend the Valencia-Atletico Madrid match in the President’s box tomorrow.

“The new Coach will be presented to the media on Monday at 12:00 [CET] at Mestalla.

“On Monday afternoon, with his coaching staff, he will lead his first training session at Paterna.”

The 59-year-old’s big break came at Parma in 2002, where he guided the Gialloblu to two fifth-place finishes in Serie A, before moving on to Fiorentina three years later, turning La Viola from a side that needed playoffs to avoid relegation to the second tier to one that reached the Champions League last 16.

He then took charge the Italian national team in 2010 after the Azzurri’s miserable World Cup defence and defied the odds at Euro 2012 as the country lost to Spain in the tournament’s final and achieved third place at the Confederations Cup the following year.

However, he quit in 2014 after another World Cup exit from the group stage and was sacked just 16 games into his last job at Galatasaray.
