Kevin Gameiro has revealed that he opted to join Atletico Madrid despite interest from Barcelona.
The 29-year-old striker joined Atletico in a 32 million euros move from Sevilla in August and after scoring twice in his opening six league matches, has revealed he thought he would be a better fit for Diego Simeone’s men then he would have been at Camp Nou.
"There was the possibility of going to Barcelona," Gameiro told Cadena COPE.
"But in my head it was clear I wanted to go to Atletico. When Atletico contacted me, it was clear.
"El Cholo [Simeone] phoned me and told me he wanted Diego Costa, but it was very difficult and I was the other option.
"Now I'm in Madrid and that's the main thing."
Gameiro scored 66 goals in three seasons with Sevilla and his Atletico side are currently unbeaten, sitting third in the standings, two points behind league leaders Real Madrid.
