Simeone: Reality isn’t fantasy

Diego Simeone insists Atletico Madrid were not negative in their approach against Barcelona. “It’s normal that people want to win, but reality isn’t fantasy…”

Simeone was criticised by some quarters for his final substitution in Atleti’s 1-1 draw with Barca on Wednesday as he replaced Yannick Carrasco with Thomas Partey, but the Coach felt the latter was “an example” in terms of “preparation and mentality” to his teammates.

“I don’t know if Barcelona was a great result, but it was a good one,” he said at a Press conference.

“We’ll play with other lads, but in the same way, against a tough team.

“As seen in other games, except Sporting, we’ve always found it difficult against those who come to shut up shop. Deportivo will come here to seek alternatives.

“We’ve not yet decided [on the team], but the players are competing well and I need all 19 with the mindset that they can play. Then I’ll make a decision based on the sensations that I have.

“I’ve always said that the squad after December [in 2013-14] with Sosa and [Diego] Ribas was very competitive, with great players, men.

“Now they are younger, but Gaitan and Gameiro still give us experience. It’s best to have a very good group that strengthens the team, with healthy competition.

“Thomas, who came as a substitute and played the last 20 minutes, was an example of the preparation and mentality we all must have.

“I always think the same [about rotations], playing those who believe they can solve the game in the best way possible, because a lot can happen between now and Wednesday.

“[The League] tells us Sunday at 15:15. As a Coach, in our position, we can’t do anything.

“It’s normal that people want to win, but reality isn’t fantasy. You can win or lose but everything’s an option. We all have our reasons.”

Simeone was then asked about Filipe Luis’ controversial Instagram post of a wound on his foot, inflicted by Luis Suarez midweek, plus the development of goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

“He’s okay and available. All I care about is Deportivo, that the stadium explodes and the team continue growing,” he added.

“In our recent history, both Courtois and all before him were great goalkeepers and worked accordingly to utilise their talent.

“The same happened with the forwards. Oblak is fine, young and constantly growing.

“What excites us the most is that he wants to keep improving and keeps a low profile, and that’s good. Such serenity is good for the team and the position.”
