Busquets: I want to retire at Barca

Sergio Busquets has signalled his intent to retire at Barcelona after finally signing his new, five-year contract on Thursday.

Busquets’ extension was officially announced last May, but only now has the midfielder put pen to paper, despite suffering from a bout of flu that meant he lasted just 50 minutes of Barca’s 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid the day before.

“I’m excited to remain connected to the club of my life,” he told Barca TV.

“I hope we can celebrate many successes during this new contract, like those before it. This is the best team in the world.

“I’m grateful for [the club’s] confidence, but it must be given and taken. I try to improve and work as hard as they come with each day.

“It would be a dream [to retire at Barca], of course I’d like to.

“We must go year by year because football’s like this. It depends on how you’re feeling and whether injuries respect you, but hopefully it’ll be so.”

The release clause in the 28-year-old’s new deal has been set at €200m, while there is the option for an extra two years.
