‘More points than Las Palmas deserve’

Quique Setien insists Las Palmas “have more points than we deserve”, despite their 1-0 win against Malaga in La Liga on Saturday.

Momo’s 10th-minute penalty was enough for Las Palmas to win their third game in four and remain in the upper echelons of the table, but Setien showed tough love to his players as he sensed a day before that they “had lost spark”.

“We have more points than we deserve,” he said after the match.

“The sensations we transmitted weren’t entirely positive. We have many things to improve on so we don’t suffer so much.

“We were extremely effective against Valencia, and that’s not common. This game was even, and I don’t know if we deserved to win it.

“Nine points from 12 is fine, and we’re not going to give them away, it’s just that they’re excessive.

“We started very well. The game was tied after the penalty, with many chances for both teams, and in the second half we had two or three counterattacks to kill the game off but suffered because Malaga asked a lot of us and we were slow with the ball.

“Without playing too well, we brought the game forward, but we can do better, although it’s unconceivable to expect winning with clarity against rivals of [Malaga’s] calibre.

“We weren’t good with our shooting or passing, and I realised in training the day before that the team had lost spark.”
