Ballon d’Or returns to original format

The Ballon d'Or will return to it's original format of being voted for by journalists, after FIFA and L'Equipe did not renew their arrangement.

The award – for which Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo is favourite to win this year for a fourth time – was created in 2010 after a merger between France Football's Ballon d'Or award and the FIFA World Player award to become one prize.

The French publication will now regain control of the award, which will now be voted for by journalists rather than players and coaches after they did not reach a new agreement with FIFA after their existing arrangement expired.

The Ballon d'Or was created in 1956, the same year as the European Champions Cup, whilst the now defunct FIFA World Player award ran from 1991 to 2009.

It is not yet clear if FIFA will reinstate the World Player award.

Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter paid 15 million euros to Editions Philippe Amaury in 2010 as the world's governing body assumed control of the Ballon d'Or, but relations broke down following the appointment of Gianni Infantino earlier this year.
