Torres: Gameiro ‘has to be’ Atleti striker

Fernando Torres insists summer signing Kevin Gameiro will be Atletico Madrid's main striker over the next few seasons.

Speaking ahead of Atletico's clash with Sporting Gijon on Saturday, Torres said the French striker would be an integral part of the starting eleven in the next few seasons, despite a slow start for the club.

"(Gameiro) has to be the striker of Atletico in the next few seasons," the 32-year-old striker told reporters.

"We had tough games early on in the season, against teams who know how to close the space for attackers smartly.

"We know that Gameiro will score a lot of goals here, everybody trusts him."

Torres was also questioned about the future of boss Diego Simeone, who has reportedly reduced his contract by two years, but the former Liverpool star would not get drawn into the reports.

"I have no knowledge of the news about Simeone," he continued.

"I can only talk about myself – I have a year left here to take advantage of. There will hopefully be many more, but I am taking it year by year."

Atletico will be hoping to make it three wins in the space of a week against Sporting Gijon, who sit two points above them in the standings.
