Sampaoli: Sevilla matched Juve

Jorge Sampaoli hailed his Sevilla players for “containing” Juventus on Wednesday and playing “on the same level” as their opponents.

Sevilla sprung surprises with their tactics and team selection for the trip to Juve in the Champions League, which included a 4-2-3-1 formation and Franco Vazquez as a false nine, and Sampaoli was delighted to see his team exert “control” on the Italians.

“We pressed well and contained Juve, also going through more anxious moments of the game, but I am satisfied,” the Coach said at a Press conference after the game.

“I evaluate the game based on performance and result. We controlled the tempo and ran into spaces. It was difficult considering the characteristics of our opponents.

“It was a huge effort and we ran some risks at the end. We had to defend in the air too and proved we are prepared for any attack.

“There was no difference between the teams, we were on the same level.

“Sergio Rico was comfortable with his feet too and made a fine save at the end. He really did well tonight.

“We need to grow and improve a great deal. There will be different requirements in different games, but we also need to create more.

“Starting in Turin with a point is good for us. We’ll have a lot of games coming up and it’s a morale-booster.

“Many players showed no fear when pressing high up. We need to improve in possession and start moves better.”

Finally, Sampaoli was pressed for his opinion on Juve after having faced them.

“They continue to be candidates for the Champions League Final,” he concluded.
