Villar withdraws UEFA bid

Angel Maria Villar has withdrawn from the race to succeed Michel Platini as then next UEFA president.

The veteran FIFA and UEFA vice president has received little support in his bid to win the candidacy next week, and will now instead focus on winning re-election as Spanish president – a post he has held for 28 years.

"After a profound reflection I have decided to my withdraw my bid," Villar said in a statement on the Spanish football federation website.

Slovenian Aleksander Ceferin is now thought to be the favourite to win the UEFA post but faces a challenge from UEFA vice president Michael van Praag of the Netherlands.
