Lopetegui demands ‘eager’ Spain

Julen Lopetegui is demanding an “eager” performance from Spain when they open their 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign against Liechtenstein on Monday.

Lopetegui began his reign as Vicente del Bosque’s successor with a 2-0 win at Belgium on Thursday, and he is hoping for more of the same against the minnows of Group G.

“We think [Morata] will be fine, he’ll prove [his fitness] in training and hopefully he’ll have no problems,” the Coach said at a Press conference.

“Our opponents will be different, but we’re focused on what we need to do. We have the enthusiasm of competing in qualifying.

“For me, [my first official game] isn’t relevant. It’s special for everyone [else] as it’s our first opportunity to pick up three points and we must show that eagerness to enter [qualification] strongly.

“The big day comes [on Monday], which is our first day of competing. I’m delighted with the attitude of the lads and their commitment.

“We’ll focus on the game and we must make a good start to the qualifying phase.

“[Our style will be] the usual one, trying to get the best out of our players. It won’t be any different tomorrow.”

Gerard Pique was booed by a significant section of Spain fans the last time La Roja played in Leon, while Diego Costa lashed out at the country’s Press over how they treated him after the victory in Belgium.

“[Pique] isn’t looking back, one just has to look at the fantastic reception we’ve had in the city,” Lopetegui added.

“I’ve seen all the players very motivated, not just Diego.

“I’m not aware of the criticism, I’m aware of what we have to do. I’m focused on what depends on us.”
