Sergi ‘enjoying right-back more & more’

Sergi Roberto claims “I’m enjoying more and more” his new-found role as right-back for Barcelona and Spain.

Barca boss Luis Enrique made the decision to play midfielder-by-trade Sergi as a right-back ahead of last season, and the graduate of La Masia has not looked back, going on to establish himself as Dani Alves’ heir and be selected by his national team as a wide stopper.

“Lopetegui comes with great enthusiasm and is very motivated,” he told AS.

“He’s teaching us how he sees football. Our philosophy has always been the same and it must continue.

“I’m playing almost every game as a full-back. I’ll have more opportunities in this position and try to do my best.

“Wherever I get the most minutes is the best [position] for me, and I’m enjoying [right-back] more and more.

“There’s competition in all positions here. Julen is counting on me as a full-back, but there are top players like Juanfran who aren’t here.

“The Coach has opted for me and Carvajal, and I must keep working hard to stay here.”
