La Liga demands video replays

La Liga has asked the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to adopt video replays, beginning in next season’s Supercopa and Copa del Rey.

According to Marca, La Liga sent a letter to the RFEF’s Referees’ Technical Committee on August 12, inviting it to start experimenting with video assistant referees (VARs).

“La Liga, very involved in the technological development of football, explains the project, promoted by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) at its 130th Annual General Meeting held in Cardiff in March, is in testing until 2018 or 2019,” it read.

“La Liga understands that the video assistant referee makes a decisive contribution to building a fairer football, avoiding human errors that are unjustifiable in a technological society like that of today.

“It is also consistent with the needs of Fair Play, the spectators and society as a whole, as understood by the highest bodies in world football who support this project.”

La Liga also asked the RFEF to discuss experimenting the technology with the IFAB in the 2017-18 Copa del Rey and Supercopa, “these being the most appropriate competitions for these tests.”

The VAR system provides assistant referees with images of a game from a private office and allows them to exchange views with the match referee in the event of controversial situations.

VARs were used for the first time in a match situation on Thursday during a friendly between Italy and France, with FIFA President Gianni Infantino hailing them as “very positive” and “historic”.

The football associations of Italy, Netherlands, Germany, Portugal, United States, Brazil and Australia have all confirmed that they will adopt the technology in some of their competitions.
