Diego Lopez wants answers from Vicente del Bosque after admitting he found his continued omission from the Spain squad “more personal than professional”.
Lopez displaced Iker Casillas as Madrid’s No 1 goalkeeper in the second half of the 2012-13 season and in La Liga the following campaign but failed to add to his single Spain cap from 2009, with his former Blancos rival remaining his country’s first choice until the beginning of Euro 2016.
“With Vicente, I’m very thankful because he called me into the national team for a year and a half,” the Espanyol new boy told Cadena COPE.
“Then strange things happened during my time at Real Madrid and there was a lack of understanding.
“I found it more a personal matter than a professional one.
“I was a starter at Real Madrid and doing well, and it was normal for me to be called up to the national team, but Del Bosque didn’t even do that.
“I hope we can have lunch or dinner someday, clarify our positions and laugh it all off because what remains of all this is that I’m very grateful to him as he gave me my debut for Spain.
“[Casillas] is a player who’s given a lot to the team, but it’s a matter of respecting the Coach’s decision to call up other players who deserved it.
“As a player, you have to train and do little else.”
