Lopetegui: Spain enjoyed themselves

Julen Lopetegui claims “enjoyment” was fundamental to Spain’s 2-0 victory over Belgium on Thursday in his first match as Coach.

David Silva goals either side of half-time in Brussels ensured Lopetegui began his reign as Spain boss on a high, and the former Porto trainer hinted La Roja’s players had become stale under his predecessor Vicente del Bosque.

“[Morata] took a blow and felt he could’ve picked up a muscle problem [if he stayed on], so he was taken off as a precaution,” he said after the game.

“We tried to work as a team with and without the ball and show all our qualities.

“There were times when we played really well, and when the match was more balanced, we knew how to suffer. We’ve prevailed thanks to a good performance.

“When you enjoy your work, you enjoy yourself. They worked hard as a team and showed quality. It’s important to enjoy playing football.

“Little by little, [our youngsters] will have to evolve. Life and football are like that.

“This was a very nice game, but the next one is more important, without doubt.”
