Asensio admits Barca interest

Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio admits he had the opportunity to sign for Barcelona before deciding to remain with Los Blancos.

The 20-year-old from Mallorca has featured in both La Liga matches played by his team so far this season as he looks to cement a place in Zinedine Zidane’s starting line-up.

His early season form has earned him a place in the Spain squad for the upcoming games with Belgium and Liechtenstein, and the attacking midfielder now wants to be a mainstay at Santiago Bernebeu for years to come.

“There was the chance to go to Barca and other teams,” Asensio revealed to El Larguero. “I was able to decide and I came to Madrid.

“I want to win all the titles and to be an example for the team and the fans. I want my story to be at Real Madrid.

“Before pre-season I made it clear I wanted to be here. If I hadn’t had minutes I would have left.

“After pre-season Zidane told me he wanted me to stay.”

Asensio also insisted he is not a replacement for the likes of Isco and James Rodriguez, who are in danger of being frozen out at Madrid.

“I haven’t come to take their place, I am here to help. If the Coach decides to put me ahead of other players, it is his decision.”

Finally, the player answered questions on teammate Gareth Bale and his own best position.

“His left foot [is his best weapon]. For now it seems that it is better than mine! He is a great footballer. I see him as a Balon D’Or contender.

“I feel comfortable in the middle, but I can play on the left or right. My aspiration is to be a starter, but there are important players here who have been here for a number of years.”
