Ramos ‘surprised’ by Casillas omission

Sergio Ramos admits he was surprised by Spain Coach Julen Lopetegui’s decision to leave Iker Casillas out of his squad.

The new La Roja boss selected Manchester United’s David De Gea, Napoli’s Pepe Reina and West Ham’s Adrian as his three goalkeepers for the upcoming internationals with Belgium and Liechtenstein, meaning Casillas has been left at home.

“It surprises everyone when a player who is so historic and emblematic doesn’t come, he is our first captain,” Ramos told reporters on Monday.

“It is surprising that Casillas is not in a squad. A new era is beginning with a radical change and a lot of excitement to do things well.”

Despite his surprise, Ramos refused to criticise former Porto Coach Lopetegui’s decision, insisting the Coach must be respected.

“I speak to Iker a lot. I am not the most suitable person to give an opinion, we have to respect the boss’ decision.”

Finally, the 30-year-old defender expressed his pride at the number of Real Madrid players called up by Lopetegui.

“It is good news that there are a lot of Madrid players, at our club we are doing things well.

“Work has its reward and that is the path to follow. Marco Asensio is doing very well.”
