Spain: Casillas out, Adrian in

Iker Casillas’ Spain career looks to be over as West Ham United’s Adrian San Miguel is picked over the Porto goalkeeper in Julen Lopetegui’s first squad.

Casillas had lost his No 1 jersey to David de Gea at Euro 2016, and the veteran’s fall sees him lose out to former Real Betis shot-stopper Adrian, despite the presence of Lopetegui – the Coach who took him to Porto last summer – at the helm.

Elsewhere, there are returns in defence for Dani Carvajal, Javi Martinez and converted full-back Sergi Roberto, while a youthful midfield is headed by call-ups for Saul Niguez and Marco Asensio and no Cesc Fabregas or Andres Iniesta, the latter of whom is injured.

Finally, a revamped forward line boasts Diego Costa, Paco Alcacer and Vitolo, with only Alvaro Morata, Lucas Vazquez and Nolito surviving from the summer’s European Championship.

The Lopetegui era officially begins against Roberto Martinez’s Belgium in a friendly on September 1, before La Roja get their 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign under way versus Lichtenstein four days later.

Spain squad in full: De Gea (Manchester United), Reina (Napoli), Adrian (West Ham United); Pique (Barcelona), Bartra (Borussia Dortmund), Sergi (Barcelona), Carvajal (Real Madrid), Martinez (Bayern Munich), Alba (Barcelona), Azpilicueta (Chelsea); Saul (Atletico Madrid), Asensio (Real Madrid), Busquets (Barcelona), Thiago (Bayern Munich), Koke (Atletico Madrid), Silva (Manchester City), Vazquez (Real Madrid), Alcacer (Valencia), Nolito (Manchester City), Morata (Real Madrid), Costa (Chelsea), Vitolo (Sevilla)
