Mou ‘turned down Spain return’

Jose Mourinho has revealed how he turned down a return to Spain in order to take the Manchester United job after accusing La Liga of lacking “competition”.

Mourinho had been linked with Valencia in the months after his dismissal by Chelsea but chose to hold out for United, and the former Real Madrid boss alluded to the dominance shared by his previous employers and Barcelona as a reason for “staying’ in the special Premier League.

“Before signing for Manchester United, I could’ve gone to Italy or even Spain, as I’ve done in the past, but the Premier League is special,” he told Nature magazine.

“In some countries, the big clubs always want to be the biggest and outrun the others who get smaller.

“In England, the opposite occurs. All clubs want to be competitive here.”
