Moreno optimistic for Espanyol

Gerard Moreno says he has a positive feeling about Espanyol this season and stressed the new arrivals at the club have increased competition.

Los Pericos have brought in midfielders Pablo Piatti, Javi Fuego (Valencia), Jose Manuel Jurado (Watford) and Jose Antonio Reyes (Sevilla), goalkeeper Roberto (Olympiacos), defender Martin Demichelis (Manchester City) and striker Leo Baptistao (Atletico Madrid), as well having a new man on the bench in Quique Sanchez Flores.

As a result, Moreno maintains he is looking forward to the season’s opening La Liga game against Sevilla at the Sanchez Pizjuan this weekend.

“The important thing is that the work we’ve done has been very good and we’ll go to Sevilla with a good feeling,” he told Mundo Deportivo.

“However, we have to continue working hard for the rest of the week so we can bring some early joy to our fans.

“The signings this year have increased competition and that can only be healthy because the level of the team has also increased.”

The 26-year-old scored Espanyol’s second goal in the 2-2 friendly draw with Juventus last Saturday and analysed the performance.

“I think we played very well against Juventus. Defensively we were really good and worked as a block to a high standard.

“I think beyond the Juve match the balance of the pre-season has been good and we’ve got to exploit this dynamic to go to Sevilla with the same sensations.”
