Official: Villarreal appoint Escriba

Villarreal have officially appointed former Elche and Getafe boss Fran Escriba as their new Coach on a one-year contract.

Escriba was immediately installed as the frontrunner to replace Marcelino, who made a sudden exit from Villarreal on Wednesday, and he has now agreed to manage the Yellow Submarine “for this season”.

Villarreal’s official website adds the 51-year-old “will lead the evening [training] session] at 19:00 CET and then hold a Press conference, accompanied by President Fernando Roig”.

Escriba began his managerial career as Quique Sanchez Flores’ assistant at Getafe, Valencia, Benfica and Atletico Madrid, before going it his own with Elche in 2012.

He guided the Valencians to La Liga at the first time of asking and would have kept them up for two seasons, but financial irregularities meant the side were demoted back to the second tier and their Coach also departing.

Escriba then took charge of Getafe last summer, but a promising first half to the season was followed by a winless run of 12 games and his dismissal in April.
