Villarreal suffer Soldado blow

Villarreal face an anxious wait to see the extent of the knee injury striker Roberto Soldado suffered on Tuesday night.

The Spain international came on as a substitute in the Teresa Herrera Trophy clash with Deportivo la Coruna, but was forced to retire from the pitch just 13 minutes later after falling badly when contesting a loose ball.

Boss Marcelino confessed afterwards that he was worried about the situation, given that the Yellow Submarine have a Champions League qualifier against Monaco next week.

“We are talking about a very complicated situation and hopefully it’s just a scare, but the player felt something in his knee, which is a bad sign.

“When we get back to Villarreal we’ll make a more accurate assessment, but right now I’m not thinking about the possibility of entering the transfer market,” he told reporters.

Depor eventually lifted the cup, winning the game 2-0 with goals from recent acquisitions Florin Andone, snapped up from Cordoba, and Carles Gil, who is on loan from Aston Villa.
