Lucas extends Atleti contract

Atletico Madrid have announced that defensive prospect Lucas Hernandez has extended his contract until 2020.

The development sees Lucas’ contract furthered by a year and his release clause increased from €25m, amidst reported interest in the centre-back from Manchester City.

“I’m very happy to stay at the club of my life,” he told Atleti’s official website upon the signing of his renewal.

The 20-year-old was drafted into the first team last season following the various absences of Stefan Savic, Jose Maria Gimenez and Diego Godin and went on to make 16 appearances, including both legs of Los Colchoneros’ Champions League quarter-final against Barcelona.

He also demonstrated his versatility by replacing the injured Filipe Luis on the left of Atleti’s back four during the Champions League final.

Lucas, a France Under-20 international, follows in the footsteps of his younger brother Theo, who recently penned a new deal before joining Alaves on loan.
