Raul: Zizou knows past doesn’t matter

Real Madrid icon Raul believes Zinedine Zidane is well aware that resting on past success isn’t acceptable at Santiago Bernabeu.

Zizou was appointed to replace Rafa Benitez in January and claimed the Champions League at the end of the campaign but Raul warned his former teammate that he can’t let up.

“Last year the team was competitive and won the Champions League. You can’t ask for more. But Zizou has played in Madrid and knows that what’s been done in the past doesn’t matter much,” Raul said, AS reports.

“This season there are great trophies at stake and Zidane has the capacity and hopefully with this squad Madrid can go for everything. He’s happy. Everything has gone well in these early days. They’re accumulating work and hopefully the first game is a great game.

“There haven’t been big signings this summer, no. Madrid have a great squad and some young players have entered the team. It’s a decision of the coaching staff and the players. I think all the players in the squad have the excitement of playing for Madrid, to be successful and earn their place.

“To be in the Madrid squad is very important and you have to demonstrate that in every training session and take advantage of the opportunities you’re given. I like the current squad, but it’s a decision of the club and the Coach, they’re the ones who decide, but the squad is great, with a lot of talent.”
