Lopetegui: Spain called yesterday…

New Spain Coach Julen Lopetegui reveals he was contacted on Thursday by the Spanish Football Federation. ‘It’s happened very quickly…’

Lopetegui was announced as Vicente del Bosque’s replacement on Thursday and presented by the RFEF the same day, and admitted in an interview with El Laguero that he was close to accepting an offer from English Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers, who have been taken over.

“They had a nice project but when the national team appeared, that was the priority. I was contacted [by the RFEF] yesterday. It’s happened very quickly,” he confirmed.

“I haven’t spoken to the captains. I’ve had messages from them. It’s important to listen to the players to get their feelings and draw conclusions. Iker Casillas? Football is living in the present. When the time comes, a decision will be made. Del Bosque? I'll talk to him. You always have to be open to listening.”
