Confirmed: Lopetegui new Spain Coach

Vicente del Bosque’s successor as Spain Coach has been confirmed as Julen Lopetegui.

Loptegui replaces World Cup 2010 and Euro 2012 winner Del Bosque, who retired after Euro 2016, La Roja eliminated in the last 16.

The 49-year-old was latterly in charge at Porto, taking over in the summer of 2014 before he was let go in January 2016, and before that was in charge of the Spain Under-21 side.

Lopetegui has also trained the Spain Under-20s and Under-19s and had a year with Real Madrid Castilla, his coaching career starting in 2003 with a brief spell at Rayo Vallecano.

A one-time Spain international as a player, goalkeeper Lopetegui turned out for Logrones and Rayo, as well as a handful of appearances for Madrid, Las Palmas and Barcelona.

Joaquin Caparros had been touted as the favourite for the post while Lopetegui was linked to Wolverhampton Wanderers in England’s Championship.
