Official: Baptistao in Espanyol switch

Espanyol have confirmed the signing of striker Leo Baptistao from Atletico Madrid for a fee reportedly in the region of €6m.

Baptistao has put pen to paper on a five-year contract with Espanyol and is set to be one of two new attackers arriving at Cornella-El Prat this summer, Getafe’s Alvaro Vazquez said to be the other.

Los Periquitos scored just 40 goals in La Liga last season, prompting new boss Quique Sanchez Flores to pinpoint attack as a priority area to strengthen.

Baptistao, who turns 24 next month, spent last season on loan at Villarreal but netted only six times, although he bagged 14 over two spells with Rayo Vallecano in the League alone.

The Brazilian follows the likes of Juan Manuel Jurado and Jose Antonio Reyes in making the switch to Espanyol since the reopening of the transfer window.
