Milan ‘set sights on Arbeloa’

Milan have reportedly “set their sights” on Alvaro Arbeloa, who will become a free agent once his contract with Real Madrid expires later this month.

According to Marca, Arbeloa is “a leading candidate” to bolster Milan’s defence this summer, although not as a full-back as the club view him as a right-sided centre-back.

The Rossoneri recently appointed Vincenzo Montella as their new Coach, and the former Roma striker is understood to be a fan of the “leadership and experience” the 33-year-old brings, plus his compatibility for the role.

Arbeloa played as a centre-back for Madrid’s Castilla team, his performances in that position earning him a promotion to the senior fold 12 years ago.

The former Spain international has reportedly received offers from Premier League clubs and freshly-relegated Newcastle United, now managed by Rafa Benitez, but he is believed to have prioritised Milan’s interest.

He will be able to boast having played for three of Europe’s most successful clubs in Madrid, Liverpool and Milan if he pitches up at San Siro.
