Caparros: Spain would be an honour

Joaquin Caparros would be honoured to take the Spain post if Vicente del Bosque steps down but insists he hasn’t been contacted yet.

The former Granada, Levante and Sevilla Coach has been tagged as the favourite to succeed Del Bosque if he retires as expected, but told AS he hasn’t been called by the Spanish Football Federation [RFEF] or its President Angel Maria Villar, though Caparros adds Villar knows he would take the job.

“I don’t know when they might call, I don’t know if they will call. Villar knows already I’m at their full disposal. It all depends on whether Del Bosque, who is the best, decides to quit,” Caparros noted.

“We should call Del Bosque Don Vicente for all he has done and all the joy he has given us. Winning a World Cup and the European Championships is the ultimate. No one can take that away from him.

“I feel the same way about Spain as most people do. I’ve been at all the major tournaments in recent years, the Euros and the World Cup. I went with my wife and cousin. I was with my children in France. I’m like any other Spain fan, with my red shirt and my face painted with the Spanish flag. When the anthem plays I get emotional, like every Spaniard.

“The team? Those details are for if the day comes, if I’m chosen. Out of respect for Del Bosque I won’t get into that. But, for example, the kids he took to the training camp in Austria, who the Press knows, are valid for the team. They are the future for anyone who takes charge and has the honour of coaching Spain.

“What can I offer? Joy, enthusiasm, hard work and experience. I’ve been in charge for more than 500 games in the Primera and what I like best is working with the cantera. The Spain side is the cantera of Spanish football, the fishing grounds from where great champions come. It’s a beautiful job.”

Caparros added when he spoke to Marca that his preference would be for Del Bosque to remain in place through to World Cup 2018, even though he would love the position himself.

“I would like Del Bosque to continue as Coach to Russia. In addition to being the Coach he’s an ambassador, a representative of the RFEF and is always at the service of football. I think the best thing for Spanish football is that he stays,” he continued.

“Of course, it would be exciting to Coach the team. That’s an honour for all Spanish Coaches. But hopefully Vicente stays as he is the best Coach possible.”
