Iniesta rues ‘wrong approach’

Andres Iniesta admits Spain were wrong in their first-half approach against Italy after Monday’s 2-0 defeat in the Euro 2016 last 16.

Goals from Giorgio Chiellini and Graziano Pelle fired Italy to victory over Spain, which ended La Roja’s 12-year unbeaten run in the European Championship, and Iniesta conceded his country had no choice but to “accept the disappointment”.

“We were too concerned about what they were doing and these situations penalised us,” the Barcelona midfielder said after the game.

“In the second half we went for them and had something else to show. We were wrong [in our approach] in the first half.

“It’s a disappointment that we have to accept. They were more effective on specific occasions and overcame us.”
