Segunda to be renamed La Liga 2

League chief Javier Tebas has announced that La Segunda will be renamed La Liga 2 from next season.

Spain’s second tier has been known as Liga Adelante for sponsorship reasons, while La Liga has been promoted as Liga BBVA, but the two references will cease to exist as of 2016-17, with Tebas seeking multiple sponsors to “exploit the brand better”.

“La Liga won’t have a sponsor in its name because we believe that the brand can be exploited better with various sponsors. Liga Adelante will be renamed La Liga 2,” Tebas said at the 13th edition of the AFEPE National Congress of Fan Clubs in Zaragoza on Saturday, Marca reports.

“The strategic plan that I mentioned three years ago in Pamplona has been fully met. We have healthy football clubs that meet their tax obligations.

“With this strategic plan, we’ll continue taking leaps forward to become the best football League in Europe.

“We have a lot of work to do and need the active participation of the fans.

“Fans are always a priority for La Liga, and we’re working to improve their comfort in stadiums.

“For the third consecutive year, we’ve broken the record for attendances, and for next season, La Liga recommends that clubs don’t put up the price of tickets and take into account the increase in television revenue.”
