Mehmet confesses Espanyol interest

Turkey midfielder Mehmet Topal has admitted he held talks over a proposed move to Espanyol this summer.

However, the 30-year-old, who already has experience of La Liga having played for Valencia between 2010 and 2012, revealed he has an agreement in place to remain with current club Fenerbahce.

“My agent had talks with four or five teams and Espanyol was one of them,” said Topal, who took part in his country’s defeat to Croatia on Sunday.

“I had two wonderful years with Valencia and I don’t know yet if my representative has spoken with Fenerbahce, but the issue is 100 per cent settled and I think it will be sorted out after the holidays.”

Topal says he was disappointed with the Croatia result, but felt the Turks put in a good performance and is now looking forward to Friday’s game against Spain.

“We did well but the match was decided by one moment. Next up is Spain, who are a very good team, and it’s going to be a final for us.

“We have two games left in the group, so let’s see what happens.”
