Bellerin admits to Euros ‘surprise’

Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin has confessed to his surprise at being selected for the Spain squad at Euro 2016.

The 21-year-old right-back says he had already packed his bags for a summer holiday before he got word that he was part of Vicente Del Bosque’s plans.

“I was just about to head off on holiday when one of my family phoned to tell me,” Bellerin told UEFA.com.

“My family told me that Del Bosque had announced at a Press conference that I’d be training with the group. To be with the provisional squad, instead of on vacation, was already a huge honour.

“After the bad luck Dani Carvajal suffered in the Champions League final the boss said I’d be his replacement.

“Well, if you’d asked me a few weeks ago if this would have been possible I wouldn’t have believed you.”

Bellerin’s brilliant displays for the Gunners last season has prompted rumours in Spain that Barcelona, where he spent his formative years, could be ready to make a bid for him this summer.
