Oviedo appoint Hierro

Former Real Madrid and Spain defender Fernando Hierro has been appointed at Segunda side Real Oviedo, his first position as a Coach.

The hiring was rumoured on Tuesday evening and confirmed by the club on Wednesday morning, with Marca reporting the deal as a two-year agreement.

Hierro is said to have beaten Bernd Schuster and Joaquin Caparros to the vacancy, having worked as technical director of the Spain team for the Spanish Football Federation, general manager of Malaga and assistant to Carlo Ancelotti at Madrid in the years since he retired from playing.

The 48-year-old won 89 caps for Spain in a 13-year international career, scoring 29 goals, and made more than 600 appearances in Spanish football, turning out for Real Valladolid prior to moving to Santiago Bernabeu.

Hierro also represented Al Rayyan in Qatar and Bolton Wanderers in the Premier League, and was recently in Mexico to finalise an agreement with the Carso Group, who have a controlling stake in the Asturian club.

Oviedo finished the Segunda season in ninth place, 16 points adrift of champions Alaves and 15 points short of Leganes, who were also promoted automatically.
