Rafael van der Vaart admits he needs a way out of Real Betis and doesn’t understand why he was overlooked last year but could still stay.
Van der Vaart moved to Benito Villamarin last summer, fulfilling a long-held ambition of playing at the club local to his grandmother, but made only seven appearances, much to his consternation.
“I’m not someone who does nothing for two years and counts the money. The situation isn’t ideal for me or the club, so I hope we find a solution,” he said, AS reports.
“But if another club doesn’t appear in the summer, I will stay at Betis. I have two years on my contract.”
Van der Vaart turned out really for Los Verdiblancos despite a difficult season that saw Pepe Mel sacked part-way through and his interim successor, Juan Merino, replaced for next year by Gus Poyet.
“I don’t know [why he didn’t get more playing time] when we lost a lot of games. If I had played badly, I’d blame myself, but the fact is I hardly played. I had an injury in the summer and again after returning. From there I hardly had any opportunities,” he lamented.
“I remember we lost three games in 10 days, 4-0, 2-0 and 1-0, but that didn’t change my situation.”
