Simeone wants signings to stay

Diego Simeone will remain with Atletico Madrid if the club shows their intent with big-money signings.

AS reports Cholo is leaning towards quitting Vicente Calderon as he’s not sure Atletico can compete with Real Madrid, winners in Saturday’s Champions League Final, and domestic champions Barcelona, and he might favour a change.

But the Argentine is also of the belief that as Atletico have progressed enormously since he took over in December 2011, they should be in a position to rival football’s biggest clubs for the world’s best players.

The will of owner and CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin is there to give Simeone what he wants but Atletico’s financial position means they’re still unable to prise players from the super-rich clubs, Chelsea, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.

Atletico have though pledged to use the €42m received in February from Guangzhou Evergrande for Jackson Martinez on a new forward and Benfica’s Nico Gaitan, a Simeone priority originally wanted a year ago, is essentially an Atleti player.

It’s hoped that Gaitan’s arrival will act as a sign to Simeone that Atletico can provide almost any player he asks for and Gil Marin is also willing to renew and improve Simeone’s contract as a show of strength and faith in the trainer.
