Benitez ‘agrees Newcastle stay’

Rafa Benitez has reportedly agreed to remain at Newcastle United even after the club was relegated from the Premier League.

Benitez took over on Tyneside for the final 10 games of the season but was unable to steer the Magpies from the drop, and it was thought the former Real Madrid Coach could walk away as a result.

But reports from Britain, including via the Daily Telegraph and Sky Sports, say Benitez has agreed to remain in his position and will be given a significant amount of money to spend to return Newcastle to the top flight at the first time of asking.

It’s said that the backing he received from the Newcastle fans has been a factor in his decision to stay, but so too has the absence of offers from the Premier League.

He also has written guarantees from owner Mike Ashley regarding the club’s budget, with any profits from player sales to be re-invested in the squad, and could sign a new contract with Newcastle on Wednesday.
