‘We want a Valencia to be proud of’

Pako Ayestaran declared his intention to help form a Valencia ‘we can be proud of’ after being confirmed as the club’s full-time Coach.

Ayestaran joined Los Che in February to work with Gary Neville, then replaced the Englishman a month later and was on Tuesday appointed on a permanent basis, with a contract to 2018.

“I’ve realised an objective. I’ll give passion and direct everything at the club, that’s what has to be done. I would like to convey the excitement of this project, it’s more difficult if doubts arise, but if you believe you generate confidence and determination. We want to make this a great Valencia,” Ayestaran said at his unveiling, AS reports.

AS notes that the Coach was flanked by President Layhoon Chan and sporting director Jesus Garica Pitarch, the latter speaking of ‘numerous and significant changes’ to the squad Ayestaran will work with, and an intention to ‘fight’ to keep the likes of Andre Gomes.

“We all want a Valencia that has clear values, a Valencia of which we can be proud and we can identify with and enjoy next season. I never thought I was second, third or first choice. I’m here with hope and conviction,” Ayesteran continued, having been asked about doubts from the fans over his confirmation.

“I’ve shown my capacity in all the projects I’ve had. I started coaching in 1989, so I have a lot of experience. I think I know the club from top to bottom. I’m a person of this club, able to align myself to the club. What generates stability is to lay the foundations and have consistency. That’s what gives you a culture.

“The way to change an opinion isn’t in words but in deeds. And I’m going to focus on that. That’s our goal, to work today so the future is different. What’s most important is that the team responds to the values, a high pace and urgency, responsibility, and that these values are put into practice.”
