Del Bosque: No room for sentiment

Spain boss Vicente del Bosque believes he has proved that “there’s no room for sentiment” when it comes to his provisional squad for Euro 2016.

Del Bosque sprung a number of surprises in his 25-man squad for France, with the likes of Diego Costa, Juan Mata and Santi Cazorla omitted and starlets Saul Niguez and Lucas Vazquez called up, and he is prepared to accept that he cannot make everyone happy with his selections.

“The squad isn’t perfect,” the Coach said at the opening of a new sports campus on Friday, AS reports.

“Sure, there are players who deserve to be [in the squad] for their great campaigns, but I’ve made it clear that there’s no room for sentiment in my choices.

“I’m fully confident that I’ve picked the best [squad]. Now we must prepare in the best way possible.

“There are 11 or 12 players who weren’t in Brazil, which speaks well of our regeneration, and what we want is [for the new faces] to adapt.

“We have no right to be champions, but we can dream of being [champions].

“[On Torres], it’s very good that the Champions League final is more important to him than the Euros.

“Of course he remembers the great harvest of trophies he achieved with the national team.

“His participation has been fantastic, and we appreciate him a lot.

“[On Lucas Vazquez], he’s a quick and rare player who can make a difference, adds depth and wins one on ones.

“[On the Estelada controversy], I’m with the union and not separation. We need a more united Spain.”
