Marcelino: Getafe relied on themselves

Villarreal Coach Marcelino points out that Getafe’s relegation fate was in their own hands after complaints from the Madrid club.

El Geta were relegated on the final day after they lost at Real Betis and Marcelino’s team were beaten by Sporting Gijon, who stayed up, with Marcelino acknowledging he has a long-standing connection with the Asturian club.

“I am tremendously grateful to Sporting because they have meant a lot to my life. I spent 15, 16 years of my life there, from when I was 12. I’ll always have gratitude in my heart to Sporting,” he told El Laguero, AS reports, but insisted Getafe could have saved themselves after the club suggested there was something untoward at El Molinon.

“I have great respect for Rayo Vallecano [who also went down] and for Getafe and they want to make me absolutely guilty for two teams going down. There was one team that depended on themselves, which was Getafe. I don’t see anyone at Real Madrid saying the reason they didn’t win the League is Granada [who lost to Barcelona on the final day].

“We are professionals and we know these situations occur. I have a good relationship with [Getafe President] Angel Torres. I think maybe I was wrong in what I said after the game. I could have spoken another time. I wasn’t smart and I spoke from the heart. What I said was wrong, and I wouldn’t say it again.”
